Original Japanese erotic color painting by an important anonymous ‘primitive’ artist. Ink and color on silk (backed with paper). Date: c.1650. Total size: 8 1/2” x 11” inches. Good color (the ‘Chinese white’ colorant or gofun, has flaked off over time) and condition. Some dirt, wrinkling and soiling, two very tiny holes (repaired), some minor marks and flaws. This scene was originally part of a handscroll with 12 scenes that were later mounted as an album. In style and composition this piece exhibits elements that are characteristic of ukiyo-e painting and printmaking from the mid-seventeenth century. The assured draftmanship and the attention to details reveal the talent of this unknown artist who lived more than 350 years ago.
