“Most probably this rendering depicts a scene that follows the example of the Chinese paintings of the Ming dynasty mimicking the Tang style. The protagonists could very well be the Chinese emperor Tang Xuanzong (712-756) and his favorite concubine, the voluptuous Yang Guifei (719-756). Look for the striking shoes that the woman is wearing. During the Tang period the footbinding of females did not exist yet, this happened only after the Song period and was only practiced by the elite.“
