Very good condition, color and fine impression. Date: c.1794. Total size: 9 3/4" x 15" inches. Signed: Choki ga. Publisher seal: Tsutaya Juzaburo. Chōki studied (together with Utamaro) in Sekien's studio and his work reflects the influence of both artists, as well as something of the Sharaku manner. Besides this, little is known about Chōki's birth, death or training.
His prints are very rare (he left a small quantity of works!) and his finest designs are among the best in Ukiyo-e and the most prized possessions of any collection! Chōki's genius displays a subtle and poetic elegance!
Comments:
Hillier: "Occasionally, he (Chōki) reminds us of Modigliani: there is a comparable, though not similar, perversion of human proportions in compositions
at once compelling and unsettling." (In "The Japanese print" p.98)Lane: "...so Chōki is reckoned among the most significant of the Japanese print-designers by virtue of a handful of prints bearing that certain impress we
recognize as his own." (In "Images from the Floating World" p.146)CLICK HERE >>> For more information on Chōki and this series.
Two designs from the same 'Courtesans' -series are described on p.117, 118 and 119 in "Japanese Prints" by Gabriele Fahr-Becker, published by Taschen.

Kogyo was inspired by his stepfather, the famous Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who was a fan of the Noh theater. Later he became a student of Ogata Gekko. A typical print by the artist looks more like an ink drawing, painting or watercolor than a classical ukiyo print. The production of a Gekko or Kogyo design required very skillful engravers and printers.

Although his prints were basically kept in traditional Japanese style, Kiyochika used Western elementslike perspective, the effect of light and the graduations of shadows. By that time he probably had read about the French impressionists and seen photographs of their works in newspapers. His prints show the beauty of the world around him during the Meiji period with a certain nostalgia for the past. He made approximately 80 Warprints ! These War prints were like a last commercial resurgence of the old Ukiyo-e business ! Kiyochika's war prints are regarded as among the best in the genre, with a masterly play on the effects of light. In 1894 Kiyochika established his own artschool. One of his students was Tsuchiya Koitsu who stayed in his master's home for 19 years. Today Kiyochika is considered as the last master of the "old" ukiyo-e ! He was active until his death ! A wonderful and rare piece of art !
