Large Oban Japanese Color Woodblock – Hokusai – 36 Views Of Mount Fuji – Great Wave.

Description:
Genuine Japanese color woodblock by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849).
Landscape print. Date: 20th Century (originally 1829-33).
Series: Meisho Edo hyakkei (‘Thirty-six Views Of Mount Fuji’). Title: The Great Wave of Kanagawa.
Large oban yoko-e size: 15 1/2” x 10 1/3” inches. Flawless state with wonderful inkbleed through.

Hokusai’s Great Wave contrasts majestic nature and diminutive mankind. The influence of Western perspective looms large in the design: where the artists of a generation or two earlier would have had to present a telephoto view, with the wave hardly reaching the height of the mountain, Hokusai is able to project us into the midst of the action, with a wide-angle close-up in which Mt. Fuji is reduced to a part of the background. The print is so strongly decorative in design that we almost tend to overlook the human element – three cargo boats with their oarsmen clinging on for dear life as the sea batters them at will. Interestingly enough, Hokusai had experimented with very similar scenes in his early uki-e prints, but only now, a generation later, did he suceed in combining Western concepts with native tradition to finalize his concept of the landscape print.

It was, incidentally, this “Great Wave” more than any other Japanese print that astounded and delighted the Impressionists and Postimpressionists in Paris at the close of the 19th century; Debussy is said to have used it as his inspiration for the orchestral piece La Mer (1905). Together with Rembrandt’s Night Watch and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Hokusai’s Great Wave is probably one of the the most dominating images in art history today.

Description:
Genuine antique Japanese color woodblock by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Landscape print. Date: Meiji period (1868-1912).
Inspired on the Mitsuke – design (No.28) of the series: ‘Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi’ (Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido – No.28, Mitsuke).
Size: 19 3/4” x 6 1/5” inches. Slight vertical centerfold (from previous album inclusion) and thin backing (precaution) otherwise fine state.

Magnificent Meiji era fan print inspired by Hiroshige’s well-known ‘Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido’. These absorbing designs capture the elegance and challenges of journey along the Tokaido which Hiroshige himself experienced. As a city man he had experienced life mainly in Edo and his travels following the Tokaido Road changed him forever. After he returned he immediately started on his masterwork series working from the sketches he had made during his journey. Hiroshige’s Tokaido designs take you back in time and offer an opportunity to see this world as he did during the reign of the Tokugawa Shogunate. He was the master of the impressionist, poetic view of nature, and he remains the best-loved of all Japanese artists.

This elegant and very rare reprint displays intricate detail and soft shading. It’s intriguing to see how the composition has been adapted to fit the circular fan shape. This print would make a fascinating companion piece to Hiroshige’s original oban sized images.

This marvellous series is known for its daring compositions using striking vantage points and vivid colors. In this design the turtle is hanging above a can on the Mannenbashi (“10,000 years bridge”) with in the background the Fuka river and Mount Fuji rising beyond. At the time vendors of birds, eels and turtles sold their wares to travellers and other pedestrains who released them into the water in hopes of bringing good fortune. The limited space is in beautiful contrast with the wonderful, broad landscape beyond. In Japanese culture the turtle symbolizes longevity.

This woodblock print is inspired on a design of a Hokusai painting called Tanabata from c.1804 and depicts a young woman carrying a flower. It is summer and the girl is wearing a light double robe, the outer layer being pale blue and the inner decorated with a stylized flower and leaf pattern. The obi is elegantly tied with a swallow-tail bow and is decorated with white clouds, phoenixes and stylized flowers. She holds up her kimono with her left hand, while in the other she holds a wild rose on a folded sheet, which she is probably taking to her mistress to add to a flower arrangement.

Famous Hiroshige - Kinryuzan Temple At Asakusa - 100 Famous Views On Edo.

Famous Hiroshige - Kinryuzan Temple At Asakusa - 100 Famous Views On Edo.

Omschrijving:
Genuine Japanese woodblock print Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Landscape print.
Date: Showa-era period (originally published in 9/1856). Series: '
One-Hundred Famous Views on Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei).
Title: 'Kinryuzan Temple At Asakusa' (Asakusa Kinryuzan). No. 99 from One-Hundred Famous Views on Edo.
Publisher: Mokuhansha. Large oban tate-e size: 16" x 10 1/2" inches.
Fine impression (with gauffrage), color and condition. No marks or flaws.

The color scheme of this composition - red on white - is reserved for propitious occasions, in this case the
beginning of winter. The place is the entrance to the temple of the Buddhist deity Kannon in Asakusa,
the oldest and most venerable Buddhist temple in Edo. Formally known as Kinryūzan Sensōji, it dates back
to 628, when two brothers discovered a tiny gold image of Kannon in their net while fishing on the Sumida River.
The image was enshrined here, and over the centuries the temple became the object of a widespread popular
following that remains strong today. As with all popular temples in Hiroshige's time, the Asakusa Kannon Temple
was also a major entertainment center.

'Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake (Ohashi Atake no Yudachi)'. No. 58 from One-Hundred Famous Views on Edo. Publisher: Watanabe. Oban tate-e size: 13 1/2" x 9 1/4" inches. Excellent impression
(with beautiful key lines), color and condition. In a magnificent state with a strong ink-bleed through to verso.

The crack of thunder is almost audible as the roiling black clouds burst into sheets of heavy rain, scattering the huddled shapes on the bridge below. This design is the undisputed masterpiece of the One-Hundred famous Views of Edo. It bears comparison in its universal appeal with another of Hiroshige's most famous landscapes, Shono in The Fifty-three Stations of The Tokaido, with which it shares the theme of escape from a sudden rain.

The immediate appeal of this composition is enhanced by finely wrought details. The irregular pattern of the black clouds above reveals to a rare degree the spontaneous hand of the printer, differing visibly from one print to another. The torrent of rain turns out on close inspection to be an overlay of black on gray at slightly different angles, some lines broken, other extending the length of the composition. The six figures on the bridge offer a lively diversity of ways to escape from the rain, in ones, twos and threes, under hats, mats, and umbrellas, in one direction and another.

This print was one of two in the series that so caught the attention of Vincent van Gogh that he executed
a careful copy in oils in 1887.

Omschrijving:
Genuine Japanese woodblock print Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Landscape print.
Date:
Showa-era period (originally published in 11/1857).
Series: 'One-Hundred Famous Views on Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei).
Title: 'Plum Garden in Kameido (Kameido Umeyashiki). No. 30 from One-Hundred Famous Views on Edo.
Publisher: Watanabe. Oban tate-e size: 15 3/4" x 10 1/2" inches. Excellent impression (with beautiful key lines), color and condition. In a magnificent state with a strong ink-bleed through to verso.

In one of the most stunning compositions of the entire series, Hiroshige brings us face to face with the "Sleeping Dragon Plum" Garyubai, the most famous tree in Edo -- a city that revered trees. We are so close that the air is thick with the powerful fragrance that was one of its several distinctions, having lured the shogun Yoshimune as he passed nearby in the early eighteenth century and thereby assured its fame. Also celebrated was the purity of its double blossoms, "so white when full in bloom as to drive off the darkness," according to one old Edo guidebook.
By far the most unusual feature of the Garyubai, however, was its peculiar manner of growth, by which certain branches spreading out from the original trunk would droop low to the ground, enter the soil, and re-emerge at a distance to create new trunks. In this manner, the tree was constantly rejuvenated and by Hiroshige's time had spread over an area some 50 feet square. The image of the "sleeping dragon" came from the way in which the reproducing branches looped across the ground.

This print was one of two in the series that so caught the attention of Vincent van Gogh that he executed
a careful copy in oils in 1887.

Showa-era period. Series: 'Eight Snow Scenes in the Eastern Capital' (Toto Yukimi Hakkei).
Title: 'Evening Snow at Takanawa' (Takanawa Yoru no Yuki). Oban yoko-e size: 14" x 8 1/2" inches.
Fine impression, color and condition. In a wonderful state.

A fantastic Hiroshige night scene from his "Eight Snow Scenes in the Eastern Capital" series. Travelers seen on the snowy embankment next to the Sumida River, fishing boats in for the night. A wonderful Hiroshige scene and favorite from the series, the rich blue of the water contrasting the white snow, with snow falling in the dark, nearly black sky.

This beautiful series has a unique place in the history of Hiroshige's prints. Hiroshige produced the designs for the series but it was not printed during his lifetime. It is unknown why the prints were never produced as records show that they were approved by the censor Fuka-Tsu Ihei in 1846 and would normally have gone straight to production then. But, they were not printed. In 1928 those original Hiroshige drawings for this series were in the possession of a French collector who agreed to allow a small publication of 100 prints of each design by publisher Shotaro Sato.

Title: 'New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree'.
From the series: 'Edo Meisho Hyakkei' (One Hundred famous Scenes of Edo).

Both in technique and expression, this haunting masterpiece is a unique achievement in the history of Japanese woodblock prints, providing a fitting concluding print to the series One Hundred famous Scenes of Edo. Although it is conventionally conidered to be one of the best three prints in the series, it really falls into a class of its own. In particular, it is the only print in the entire series that involves fantasy. In the late substantial, when the print first appeared, the world of Japanese color prints was in fact dominated by themes of the fantastic, but the aging Hiroshige held fast to his ingrained reliance on the certainties of the observed world. Here alone he adventured into the world of spirits.

Five beautiful women on a rocky embankment at the water diving for clams in search of pearls. In the center panel, a young beauty combing her hair.

RARE SET OF SILKSCREEN PRINTS - BULLFIGHT - PAUL BLANCA.

RARE SET OF SILKSCREEN PRINTS - BULLFIGHT - PAUL BLANCA.

Description:
"SANGRE DE TORO"(1991) by Paul Blanca (1954), set of 8 silk-screen prints with Bull’s blood on 300 grams/m2 BFK rives (94 x 73cm) in a deluxe box. Poem by Koos Dalstra. Size: each 35 x 45cm or 45 x 35cm. In an edition of 35. (number 29)  The series of prints by Paul Blanca is exceptional for obvious reasons. Blanca, who had lived and worked in Spain for two years, had while there, become obsessed by bullfighting and kept up with all the "ferias" (local seasonal festivities) to take photographs. He found it intriguing that when the "corrida"(bullfight) was at an end, the bulls’meat was served in restaurants but nothing was done with the blood- it is the fluid of life, after all. Blanca investigated whether blood could be used as silk-screen printing ink. The treated blood was used for the Sangre de Toro portfolio, based on Blanca's photos. Pressing the ink through the screen only once produced no more than a light pink colour, and in the end 35 'pulls' where needed to achieve the darkest tone in the pictures, creating a visible relief. The series forms a high point on the periphery of Blanca's photographic work. For the "Afficionados" (devotees) it is a must, for opponents of bullfighting it is also a monument of beauty.

Quotes:
"Blanca is my only competitor" - Robert Mapplethorpe (famous photographer)   "..he reaches a kind of poetry that very few photographers have." - Bill Katz (New York designer and collector of photography) in "True colors" - The real life of the art world by Anthony Haden-Guest (p.228 - 237)   The book ''True colors'' is the most talked-about book on art since ''The Shock of the New''.   The whole set of prints is in excellent condition. Each print is pencil signed by the artist: 29/35 Paul Blanca.   Blanca is a provocative and controversial artist, for that reason he was a suspect in the attack on Rob Scholte in 1993. But was found innocent. Dalstra studied criminology, and is now a dedicated poet and writer.
