Title: 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by G. Winkel and C. Uhlenbeck.
With 277 full colour illustrations of the prints shown at
the largest shunga exhibition ever held in the world called
"Lentelust" in Rotterdam, the Netherlands! There's an
excellent historical overview (17th C. to Meiji period and beyond)
of the genre with treatments on all the major Ukiyo-e masters such
as Settei, Moronobu, Harunobu, Koryusai, Hokusai, Utamaro, Eiri,
Shunchτ, Kiyonaga, Shigenobu, Eisen, Eizan, Kunisada, Kyosai...etc.
There's all so a lot of attention to the social, historical and
artistic context, the various impressions, techniques of
composition, formats, toy-prints, voyeurism, homosexuality and
the humour in the designs! In our opinion this book is the most
beautifully illustrated and best reference in the shunga genre
surpassing the somewhat dated ' Shunga, the Art of Love in
Japan' by Tom and Mary Evans !

Description:
Beautiful original antique Japanese color woodblock Hokusai (1760-1849).
Shunga (Erotic print). Very good condition, fine impression and colors.
Date: c.1812. Total size: 10" x 15" inches.
Series: ' Azuma Nishiki ' (Brocade of the East). Depiction
of an intimate couple! The woman leaning on a black sewing box
while the man pulls up her kimono! There's a little
bit of paper loss caused by the use of metallic pigment,
slight centerfold, some tiny holes and staining, minor wear and soiling otherwise very
good state with very fresh colors! Full size, extensive
'burnishing' to black parts! Nicely executed use of gauffrage
and metallic highlights (on sewing-box and clothing)! Highly
detailed carving of individual hair-lines!
The love-making position of this couple was a very popular one
among Ukiyo-e artists because it enabled a more naturalistic
depiction of the genitalia and endowed the composition with a
tension likened to a tightly strung bow! This design is from
Hokusai's first oban series, and he made his most impressive shunga
designs in this format!

Book No. 7 in the series 'Japanese Complete
Ukiyo-e Shunga Series' by Richard Lane and Yoshikazu Hayashi is
totally dedicated to the 'Brocade of East' -series! This famous set,
consisting of 27 books, are a treatise of the
most important shunga series of the Ukiyo-e!
A closer study on Hokusai's shunga designs in the oban format,
like the deliberate composition, the complex placing
of the kimono's and garment, reveal the genius of a great
master!
Beautiful and very rare
piece of art by one of the most famous artists in the
history of Japan !
Tomioka
Eisen.
Tomioka Eisen was
born in Nagano prefecture, he went to Tokyo to study drafting and
was employed by the army. Later he resigned from the army and became
a pupil of Kobayashi Eitaku and a full time illustrator. Most
of his works were illustrations for newspapers, kuchi-e and shunga!
He is one of the most important woodblock artists of the Meiji
period!
About Tomioka
Eisen's work in shunga: "Although at a distance of almost a
century and with a style and a poetic language by now quite old, we
are therefore in front of a trial of subtle and allusive eroticism
for certain verses similar to that of Utamaro..." (p. 168 in ' Shunga,
the Erotic Art of Japan' by Marco Fagioli).
