Anonymous. Shunga (Spring picture). Date: 19th Century.
Black ink ('sumi') and colors on paper. Total size (with text): c.56
2/3" x 12" inches. Image size: c.19" x 12" inches.
Very good condition. Made after late 17th Century scroll
paintings in the so-called 'Primitive Ukiyo-e' style.
Depicted is a very unusual and comic scene of a young man taking a
foot-bath while an old man (probably a monk!) washes his asshole!

2/3" x 8 7/8" inches.
Series: Manpuku Wagojin (The Gods of Intercourse). Fine impression,
very good color and condition. Very minor red
transfer staining, very minor soiling, marks and flaws. Wonderful
use of metallic pigments and very detailed carving of inidividual
hair-lines! Nicely executed embossing! One of the most famous
designs in shunga by Hokusai representing a pair of lovers formed by
the personifications of the phallus and the vulva!
References:
"Unlike other erotic books, which concentrate on
tales of the pleasure quarters Manpuku Wagojin is an
example of the enpon (erotic tales in colour) form and
describes stories concerning ordinary men and women. In this case
the story involves Osane, daughter of the rich merchant Sazayama
Arisuku, and Otsubi, daughter of the ruined merchant Kawanuya Hinbei.
The tale is an ironic variation of moralistic stories: Otsubi learns
to take advantage of her sexual attraction in order to gain an
important position in society, while Osane, who grew up without a
proper awareness of her own femininity ends up as a depraved
prostitute. The explicitly anti-Confucian message is that the
achievement of a certain social status depends entirely on one's
skill in exploiting sexual resources". (p.456 in 'Hokusai'

"Around 1890 the album Kuni no Sakae was published.
This album by an anonymous artist (containing 12 aiban yoko-e, plus
a tobira-e) is inspired by those of the book Manpuku Wagojin illustrated
by Hokusai in 1821; every one of these prints is the result of an
operation of montage: for each one of his plates, the anonymous
artist has reunited the subjects of various shunga of Hokusai's book
making of them single orgiastic scenes". (p.118 in 'Shunga,

"The other major work among the artist's shunga books will
be found in the Gods of Intercourse (Manpuku wagojin),
datable to 1821.
The printing is of the finest quality and the illustrations, too,
are uniformly excellent. This work features a number of multiple
scenes: double pairs of couples, onlookers, and the like. The
technique has appeared earlier in classical shunga scrolls, and
Hokusai adapts it to fill each frame to the limit in complex
