Very Rare Shunga - Utagawa School

Violent Cruxifiction Scene - Foxfire - Toy Print - c.1840.

Size: 8 2/3" x 7 1/2" inches. Fine impression, very good color and condition. A small wormhole, very minor wear and soiling
otherwise very good state! Wonderful use of gauffrage and 'bokashi' -shading ! A highly unusual scene depicting two cruxifiction
scenes (in twice!) involving a partly nude male and female nailed to a board ! The setting is probably near the surroundings of the
Kurosuke Inari shrine. The association with Inari and foxes is accentuated by the inclusion of a burning kitsunebi, 'fox-light' or
will-o'-the-wisps, near the protagonists. Look for the comical facial expression on the fishing basket !

Extremely Rare Utamaro Shunga Masterpiece - Homo-Erotic - c.1803.

Description:
Original antique Japanese color woodblock prints Utamaro (1753-1806). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1803.
Half-size oban yoko-e size (O-tanzakuban yoko-e) : 6 1/2" x 14" inches. Very good impression, color and condition.
A slight vertical album fold, minor creases, marks and flaws otherwise a very well preserved print !
Full size, no repairs and wonderful use of gauffrage !

The young boy depicted here is a so called temple page ('chigo' or 'terakosho' ), they were available to monks, who were regarded without censure as among the most avid adherents to the so called ' Way of the youth'.

As often with male-male depictions in Japanese shunga, one of the depicted persons - taking the active role - is an older man ('nenjo' ). The receptive partner ('wakashu' ) was invariably a pre-pubescent or pubescent boy or a young man who has not yet shaved off his forelock, a sign in Japanese society that he had not yet come of age. Male-male relationships, within the samurai class and in monasteries between monks and their young acolytes, were a common phenomenon in Tokugawa Japan, as was prostitution among young kabuki actors of female roles.

The size of this very rare print is quite uncommon: a half-size horizontal oban design would have been carved on one half of a woodblock, with another design carved from the other. This design is most likely from a set of twelve prints issued late in Utamaro's life ! Look for the inro on the floor behind the young man's head !

Another design from this series is housed in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam !

Oban yoko-e size: 10" x 15" inches. Date: c.1820. Series:' Yanagi no Arashi' (Willow Storm).
Very good impression (with gauffrage and metallic pigments), very good color and condition.
Colors slightly faded, very slightly soiled, slight centerfold, minor marks and flaws otherwise very good state!

This is the 7th design of the ' Willow Storm' -series.Yoshikazu Hayashi says in Vol.4 Shigenobu,
Yanagi no Arashi:"A rendezvous between two bickering lovers. It is close to the style of the Utagawa school,
but not quite. The compostion is explicitly designed to display the forcefully erect penis and the smallest
detail of the woman's genitalia".

"I believe that this particular set, however, is probably not only one of his masterpieces, but should also be
included among the best works in Edo shunga history". (Yoshikazu Hayashi in Vol.4 Shigenobu, Yanagi no Arashi )
