(in twice!) involving a partly nude male and female nailed to a
board ! The setting is probably near the surroundings of the
Kurosuke Inari shrine. The association with Inari and foxes is
accentuated by the inclusion of a burning kitsunebi, 'fox-light' or
will-o'-the-wisps, near the protagonists. Look for the comical
facial expression on the fishing basket !

A slight vertical album fold, minor creases, marks and flaws
otherwise a very well preserved print !
Full size, no repairs and wonderful use of gauffrage !
The young boy depicted here is a so called temple page ('chigo' or 'terakosho'
), they were available to monks, who were regarded without censure
as among the most avid adherents to the so called ' Way of the
youth'.
As often with male-male depictions in Japanese shunga, one of the
depicted persons - taking the active role - is an older man ('nenjo'
). The receptive partner ('wakashu' ) was invariably a pre-pubescent
or pubescent boy or a young man who has not yet shaved off his
forelock, a sign in Japanese society that he had not yet come of
age. Male-male relationships, within the samurai class and in
monasteries between monks and their young acolytes, were a common
phenomenon in Tokugawa Japan, as was prostitution among young kabuki
actors of female roles.
The size of this very rare print is quite uncommon: a half-size
horizontal oban design would have been carved on one half of a
woodblock, with another design carved from the other. This design is
most likely from a set of twelve prints issued late in Utamaro's
life ! Look for the inro on the floor behind the young man's head !

series is housed in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam !

designed to display the forcefully erect penis and the smallest
detail of the woman's genitalia".

Tobira-e size (Courtisan): 8" x 5 1/2" inches. Tobira-e
size (Flowers): 8 1/3" x 5 2/3" inches.
Fine impression, very good colors and condition. Some minor wear,
staining and soiling, the Courtisan print has a small
thinning spot above the woman's head in the white part, minor marks
and flaws but overall in a very good state with fresh colors!
Wonderful use of metallic pigments and very detailed carving of
individual hair-lines! Nicely executed embossing (gauffrage) and 'bokashi"-shading
to the faces. One scene is a depiction of an Oiran (courtisan) and
the other depicts flowers!
Eisen was a student of Eizan, he excelled in the shunga genre and
his best work dates from this period (1820s) !

Series:'Michiyuki koi no futozao' .(On the Road: Love Songs for the
Thick-necked Shamisen). Size: 10 1/4" x 8 1/4" inches.
Very good impression (with gauffrage), color and condition. Backing,
some very small repairs, minor marks and flaws.
Utamaro's famous shunga ehon Michiyuki koi no futozao was inspired by
theatrical dramas of the Japanese puppet theater,
the 'Bunraku'. The subject is based on dramatized tales (yet based on
true stories) of 'fated lovers' who commit double 'love' suicide.
The stories evolved into a line of dramas for 'Bunraku' and Kabuki
theatre called shinju mono (double-suicide plays) and by chronicles on
famous lovers, such as Gompachi and Komurosaki.
Shunga designs by Utamaro are very rare and highly treasured !
