Depicted is a mature couple, the woman with shaved eye-brows
(indicating that she is either married, or a widow).
They engage most passionately, their kiss however, far
overshadowed by the blatantly violent reactions of their sexual
organs.
The design may seem a trifle static: doubtless the artist
intended to provide both readers and participants with a kind of
catharsis, the perception that the sexual climax may seem a kind
of temporary death.

In a hasty bout of love-making, the young woman still wears her
hat (ageboshi) and toed socks (tabi). Their love-making position
was very popular with Ukiyo-e artists because it enabled a more
naturalistic depiction of the genitalia and endowed the
composition with a tension likened to a tightly strung bow.

Meiji Shunga Oban Ikeda Terukata - Young Couple.
Description:
Original
antique Japanese color woodblock Ikeda Terukata (1883-1921).
Shunga (Erotic print). Meiji period (c.1900-5).
Fine impression, colors and near fine condition.
Oban size: 9 1/2" x 12 3/4" inches. Very slight
centerfold, a tiny staining spot, minor marks and flaws otherwise
in a wonderful state! Magnificently detailed print with
excellent use of 'bokashi'-shading to the faces, gauffrage and
highly detailed carving of individual hair-lines !
A
young couple lost in the passion of love-making !
The prints
in this album are characteristic of shunga from the Meiji era:
the printing is exquisite, with a generous use of metallic
pigments and bokashi (tonal gradation) to express the lovely
quality of the kimono. The contour lines are equally refined.
Other Meiji artists who designed similar albums include Yoshu
Chikanobu, Tomioka Eisen and his pupil Hamda Josen. (cat.no.99).
Terukata was a pupil of MIzuno Toshikata (1866-1908). While at
Toshikata´s studio he met and later married Sakakibara Shoen
(1888-1917), who as Ikeda Shoen became an artist in her own
right. Terukata was a designer of kuchi-e and an illustrator
of books and magazines. He also produced many horizontal
plates, often in albums of twelve images, that featured the
latest fashions for major department stores like the
Mitsukoshi.
These were sometimes issued as a form of advertisement. (p.239 in
'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by C.Uhlenbeck and M.Winkel.)

of the house is entertaining his geisha's (courtisans) and a
customer who is getting his kiseru (Japanese smoking pipe)
ready. Next to the customer sits an oiran (high-class courtisan)
accompanied by a young attendant (kamuro)!
"The identity of the artist in this work is still unclear.
In his personal notes regarding this impression in the Pulverer
collection, Jack Hillier argued for an attribution to Eisen due
to the quality of the floral cartouches and the facial
expressions. One of the pages is signed with a pseudonym, which
could be read 'Gonomon Shunjono' or 'Shunjoshin', but to date no
artist has been linked to this name. If we are to accept an
attribution to Eisen based on stylistic grounds, then perhaps it
should be dated to the latter part of his career". (p.166
