Large Shunga Painting - Aristocratic Female Warrior - Anonymous - c.1850.

Description: Antique Japanese erotic painting on silk by a highly talented unknown artist. Shunga (Erotic print). Ink and colour on silk. Signature: Unidentified red seal in bottom right corner. Date: c.1850.  Size: 16 1/2" x 13" inches. Magnificently detailed piece with fine colors and in a magnificent state. A female warrior from the upper class of samurai (shaved eyebrows) is making love to her partner while still holding her wakizashi (short sword). In the fashion of that era Japanese women of high-class (aristocratic) shaved off their eyebrows. After this, they painted hazy new eyebrows high on their foreheads (close to the hair-line) by dipping their thumbs into black powder, and then smearing them onto their foreheads. They also drew bright red rose-bud lips on over their natural lip-lines. This piece is clearly inspired in style and subject matter by the scroll paintings of the 17th Century.

Two Rare Shuncho Prints - Dreaming Maiden - Attack By Devils - Cunnilingus - c.1800.

Description: Antique Japanese color woodblock Katsukawa Shunchõ (act. c. 1780s-early 1800s). Shunga (Erotic print).  Date: c.1800. Size (each): 10 2/5" x 8 3/4" inches. Series: 'Takara bako (A Female Treasure)'.  Title: 'Maiden Dreaming of Attack by Devils'. Fine impression, color and near fine condition.  Some very slight soiling only otherwise magnificent state. An extra-ordinarily design with on the right plate a sleeping maiden whose diabolical dream (left plate!) seems to be incited by an adolescent performing cunnilingus performed on her. Shuncho's style (like Kiyonaga) tends to be gentle, and in shunga designs he conveys a sense that the women too are enjoying the sexual encounter. Reference: p.112 (Ill.159) in 'Strangers in Paradise: the Foreign Image in Japanese Art & Shunga' by R. Lane. Very rare pieces !

Utagawa Kunisada - Oiran And Client - c.1851.

Description: Antique Japanese color woodblock Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1851 (Kaei 4).  Obon yoko-e size: 13 2/5" x 9 2/3" inches. Series: 'Shõ-utsushi Aioi Genji'. Fine impression (with gauffrage and metallic pigments), color and very good condition. Some very slight soiling and some small professionally restored wormholes in the margins, minor marks and flaws. An oiran (high-class courtesan) and her client. In the design a lot of Japanese symbols concerning New Year's Day are depicted for instance: on the table left a woman with a broom, the long-haired turtle and the plum-blossom (winter). The heart-shaped 'love' leaves (Cyclaam) on the square bowl can be found on the kimono of the woman. Reference: The 'Shõ-utsushi Aioi Genji'-series is illustrated and described in depth by Yoshikazu Hayashi's in Vol.19 of 'The Complete Ukiyo-e Shunga'. 'Shõ-utsushi Aioi Genji' tells the story of the amorous adventures of Ashikage Yoshimitsu, the third Muromachi shõgun and there is no doubt that this book series was a private edition for a daimyõ. Hayashi states: "...The polychrome pages more than live up to their name: they are printed from dozens of blocks. The use of gold, silver, graded color printing, gauffrage, embossing from the reverse side, and lacquer, "gold dust" or powdered mica further enhances this deluxe production. One can only wonder that such a shunga book could have been a viable commercial product".

Description:
Antique Japanese tortoiseshell harikata or harigata (artificial phallus) including operational string (not authentic). 
Size: approx. 6 1/2" long and 1 2/5" thick. Artist unknown (but most probably sold by the Yotsumeya, 
a sex shop that was specialized in erotic attributes and paraphernalia). Date: c.1860s (Early Meiji Period). 
Condition: Some very tiny insect holes (see pictures!), some usage wear but overall in a fine state. 
Proficiently made, and meticulously imitating the real male phallus.

The harikata is an artificial strap-on dildo that were made from several materials such as papier mache, water-buffalo horn, 
ivory or in this case from the exclusive tortoiseshell. They were (most probably) mainly used by geisha's as a masturbatory tool 
for their own pleasure or for their secret encounters with female lovers.

Only a couple of light spots and creases. A magnificent second state of the finest image from Kuniyoshi's acclaimed series. The translation of the text in the design reads: Man: "I have to go because the mikoshi shrine has come". Woman: "What are you saying? The festivities going on here are far more important !
