Fine impression (with metallic pigments), very good color and condition. Some tiny wormholes (tissue backed), slighty backed, some minor wear and soiling.

“A superb fold-out image featuring a discouraged impotent hero surrounded by a female following. When the tabs are opened we can witness his complete transformation into a self-assured man after divine intervention. Among the copulating animals one can distinguish snakes, mandarin ducks, crows, dragonflies, grasshoppers, frogs, chickens, salamanders, dogs, foxes, deers, mouses, dromedaries (as icing on the cake!) and many more....”

It’s clear that the design is from the early 1820s and is most probably by the founder of the Utagawa school himself Toyokuni I. Although is work in shunga is scarce, Toyokuni was among the most prolific creators of images of actors in the early 1800s. His particular style of depicting male actors especially in the facial features (the ‘Toyokuni face’ - toyokunigao) of the male hero in this print are clearly apparent.

Very rare!
