Size: ca. 4 2/3” x 6 2/3” inches (without frame). ca. 5 2/3” x 7 2/5” inches (incl. frame).
Very good state. Some minor loss of pigment.

A very nice piece of authentic Chinese painting made in the refined old school manner. Look for the subtle facial expressions , the transparant colors and the poetic atmosphere in which this threesome takes place. Such details are absent in later 19th Century works that are more focused on the decorative and physical (larger genitalia and more pronounced breasts) aspects. There’s also more attention to gratuitous effect in the later erotic paintings and they lack the refinement of the older pieces. In ancient China especially the very small feet of the young females were beloved by Chinese men and bare feet are very seldomly depicted.

Rare Oriental Erotic Miniature Painting On Ivory - 19th Century.

Antique Oriental erotic miniature painting on ivory. Date: 19th Century. Artist unknown. Size: 4" x 3 1/3" inches.
Very good condition with no marks or flaws to report. Look for the intricate details of the brushwork such as for instance the individual hair-lines of the protagonists.

Beautifully detailed painting of a young couple (look for the feminine facial features on the young man) making love in the corner of a room with the rocks outside visible through the windows. The artist very nicely interweaved different styles and influences from Japanese, Indian and Chinese erotica from the 19th Century. The rendering of the activities as depicted within the room is Indian Mughal-style, the typical pose of the couple is in the Japanese shunga tradition and the rocks featured outside the window is in the characteristically Chinese painting style.

The miniature painting dates back to the beginning of the 16th Century where in France and shortly after the Flemish illuminators introduced the portrait miniature as a disconnected portrait placed within either a locket or an enclosed “portrait box”. In the early stage minaturists only painted in watercolour and gouache on specially prepared paper or vellum but in the beginning of the 18th Century the technique was extended to enamel on a metal surface and the use of ivory as a ground which provided an illuminated, bright surface for transparent pigments to heighten the effect.

In the beginning of the 19th Century, French miniaturists were inspired by the easel portraits of Jacques-Louis David. In the following decades miniature portraits were continued to be made although they remained a high-prized luxury. Eventually the cheaper b&w portraits in the innovative medium of photography, which became more popular and accessible, made miniature paintings an anachronism.

A thought-provoking piece featuring a tied up woman being captured and left in a room while her kidnappers are standing outside in the rain.

Ito Seiu was a Japanese style-painter from Tokyo, who studied Rimpa school under Nozawa Teiu.
While he worked as an illustrator for newspapers, he was also known as a genre painter depicting sado-erotic subjects and ghosts. Because of his pioneering role in the art of bondage Seiu is nicknamed the 'father of kinbaku'.

A very delicate portrayal of two Chinese girls examining the vulva of one of them. In an earlier stage of the painting both girls' vulva's were visible but the artist decided it was too much and overpainted the other vagina which is now concealed by her left sleeve. Although the image has a contemporary realistic feel, it is clearly inspired on the ancient Chinese painting style. Look for he small lotus feet which were the Chinese idea of beauty.

A certificate of authenticity (signed by the artist) is included. The certificate reads: This artwork identified as "Two Chinese Girls" is published in a limited edition of 20 giclee prints numbered from 1/20 to 20/20. The artwork is signed by the artist F.M. Bertholet at the right hand bottom and the edition number 6/20 (7/20,8/20 or 9/20) is stated at the reverse.

The giclee prints were directly acquired from the artist who emphasized that the numbers were not even used up.
There are only 15 impressions instead of the 20.

Description:

Antique Japanese tortoiseshell harikata or harigata (artificial phallus) including operational string (not authentic).
Size: approx. 6 1/2" long and 1 2/5" thick. Artist unknown (but most probably sold by the Yotsumeya, a sex shop that was specialized in erotic attributes and paraphernalia). Date: c.1860s (Early Meiji Period). Condition: Some very tiny insect holes (see pictures!), some usage wear but overall in a fine state. Proficiently made, and meticulously imitating the real male phallus.
The harikata is an artificial strap-on dildo that were made from several materials such as papier mache, water-buffalo horn, ivory or in this case from the exclusive tortoiseshell. They were (most probably) mainly used by geisha's as a masturbatory tool for their own pleasure or for their secret encounters with female lovers.

Richard Thuss, born in Nuremberg, studied in Vienna, Munich and Nuremberg. Richard Thuss, geboren in Neurenberg,

From 1918 to 1930 Thuss was the chief sculptor for the Bergmann Foundry and executed many of the highly prized
sculptures that are signed Nam-Greb, Thuss, or with a B within an urn design (those that were not designed by Franz
the elder). Laat in zijn leven (na 1930) woonde hij in Cincinnati tot zijn dood in 1945. Van 1918 tot 1930 Thuss was de

Rare Antique Japanese Sex Toy
Harigata - Shunga - c.1850.

Description:

A magnificent antique Japanese papier mache dildo (harigata or harikata) with silk foot including operational string
(not authentic) and original fitted wooden box. Size: approx. 6 1/2" long. Artist unknown. Date: c.1850. C
ondition: some usage wear. This is a very skillfully crafted and detailed piece of Japanese erotica which meticulously mimics the real male genitals.

The harigata is an artificial penis usually made of leather, and at times a strap-on made from papier mache, horn, ivory or tortoiseshell. The geisha in Old Edo (1618-1868) enjoyed solitary pleasure with such a life-like dildo inserting it into her vagina.

The harigata is often depicted in shunga (erotic print) especially in its depiction of lesbian intimate encounters. One of the most famous examples is Eiri's masterpiece from his 'Models of Calligraphy' (Fumi no kiyogaki) series depicting such a female-female scene (see for illustration Shunga Page 3 at the top !).

Surviving sex toys from the 19th Century are incredibly rare !

This painting is presumably copied from a European (French) engraving by a Japanese artist and bares comparison to the style of Boucher.
