Hokusai Masterpiece - Fukujuso (The Adonis Plant)

Bathhouse Rape Scene  (P.O.R.)

Description:
Original antique Japanese color woodblock Hokusai (1760-1849). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1815-17.
Series: Fukujuso (' The Adonis Plant') a.k.a. 'Lovemaking at New Year's'. Oban yoko-e size: 15" x 10" inches. Fine impression with gauffrage and use of metallic pigments, very good colors and condition. Slight centerfold, very slightly trimmed, some minor wrinkling and soiling. A very small repair (hardly noticeable!). Minor marks and flaws else in an excellent state for a print of this period and extreme rarity! From Hokusai's most celebrated shunga series Fukujuso, this is plate 7 depicting the maladroit rape scene! This print is from the earliest edition of this series with the text printed above the figures! The Fukujuso series has been described in countless books, treatises, essays, magazines...etc.

The 'Fukujuso'-series is characterized by the enormous scale of the figures, their exceptionally bold placement on the page, and the contrast between the rounded nude forms and the terse crinkled lines of the garment.

Pl. 7: "Hokusai here offers us a welcome change of pace: turning from the world of passionate lovers to a scene of near-comedy - as a clownish sansukι, bath-house attendant, attempts to seduce a maiden he has long lusted for, as she emerges from the bath. Although in general rape scenes do not appeal to me, in this case one tends to sympathize with the clumsy, love-lorn servant - who holds a coin in his ear, as was the custom of purse-less lackeys". (excerpt from Vol.23 of Richard Lane and Yoshikazu Hayashi's treatise on Hokusai's oban series Fukujuso)

An extremely rare opportunity for the devoted collector to own one of Hokusai's shunga masterpieces !!

Important Meiji Period Shunga - Ikeda Terukata - After Hokusai - Suckling.

Description:
Original antique Japanese color woodblock Ikeda Terukata (1883-1921), Shunga (Erotic print). Meiji period (1868-1912).
Oban size: 14" x 9 7/8"inches. Fine impression, color and very good condition. A slight centerfold, some minor foxing and some damp staining. Beautiful use of gauffrage, bokashi-shading and highly detailed carving of individual hair-lines! A wonderful Meiji-period print clearly inspired by Hokusai's design from his most famous erotic oban album 'The Adonis Plant' (Fukujuso). These prints are characterized by the enormous scale of the figures, their exceptionally bold placement on the page, and the contrast between the rounded nude forms and the terse crinkled lines of the garments. The lovers are employed in the erotic position called "suckling" and their bodies occupy nearly the entire field of the composition.

Towards the end of the Meiji era, shunga underwent a new development. Artists involved in the illustration of modern Japanese novels, newspapers and other new graphic media - like picture postcards after 1900 - were attracted to erotica as a depiction not of the Yoshiwara, but as a representation of exotized 'Bohemian Parisian culture'. These artists designed a number of albums that have no relationship to the Yoshiwara, include no text within the images and resemble earlier shunga only in the use of the orihon format. (p.217 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel)

A magnificent shunga print attributed to the talented Meiji artist Ikeda Terukata !

Wonderful Shunga Catalogue  - Japanese Erotic Fantasies -

Description:
Wonderfully illustrated catalogue (2004) English. Hardcover 248pp. Size: 10 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches. Excellent condition.
Title: 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by G. Winkel and C. Uhlenbeck.

With 277 full colour illustrations of the prints shown at the largest shunga exhibition ever held in the world called "Lentelust" in Rotterdam, the Netherlands! There's an excellent historical overview (17th C. to Meiji period and beyond) of the genre with treatments on all the major Ukiyo-e masters such as Settei, Moronobu, Harunobu, Koryusai, Hokusai, Utamaro, Eiri, Shunchτ, Kiyonaga, Shigenobu, Eisen, Eizan, Kunisada, Kyosai...etc.

There's all so a lot of attention to the social, historical and artistic context, the various impressions, techniques of composition, formats, toy-prints, voyeurism, homosexuality and the humour in the designs! In our opinion this book is the most beautifully illustrated and best reference in the shunga genre surpassing the somewhat dated ' Shunga, the Art of Love in Japan' by Tom and Mary Evans!

Unmissable for the shunga connoisseur! A future classic !
