Date: c.1855. Koban size: 4 7/8" x 3 5/8" inches. Fine impression (with gauffrage), color and condition.
Flawless state ! Subject: Abalone (awabi) diver being ravished by a giant octopus.

The humour of this image lies in the fact that the octopus wears a white head scarf of a commoner.
Either this depiction is the imagination of the woman or the octopus represents the male lover who
sees himself as the tremendous lover that octopuses are purported to be.

Rare Famous Kunisada Shunga - Bestiality - Princess

Eight Dog Heroes - c.1837.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (Erotic picture).
Date: c.1837 (probably New Year). Size: 11 1/2" x 9 3/4" inches.
Series:' The Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan' (Koi no yatsufuji),
Fine impression, color and very good condition.
A very small hole in the upper margin (see picture!).
Some very minor soiling, marks and flaws.
Look for the magnificent use of gauffrage on the fur of the dog !

This design comes from the series Koi no yatsufuji which was a parody on the famous book
Satomi Hakken-den by Kyokutei Bakin. The illustrations in Koi no yatsufuji cleverly transform
the most famous scenes from the original into erotic images. At the time this erotic publication
by Kunisada (he used the pseudonym Bukiyo Matahei for this series.) was extremely well received.
The carving and printing techniques were excellent using mineral pigments and magnificent
use of gauffrage.

This scene depicts Princess Fusehine being assaulted by the canine hero Yatsufusa
who's transformed into a dog !

Rare Famous Kunisada Shunga - Lesbian Scene - Telescope

Antique Japanese color woodblock Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (Erotic picture).
Date: c.1837 (probably New Year). Size: 11 1/2" x 9 3/4" inches.
Series:' The Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan' (Koi no yatsufuji), Fine impression,
color and near fine condition. Some very minor soiling, marks and flaws.
Look for the magnificent use of gold and silver pigment details in the kimono of the man !

This design comes from the series Koi no yatsufuji which was a parody on the famous book

In another shunga design depicting dogs from Hokusai series 'The Horny God of Izumo' (En-musubi Izumo no sugi), two lovers are unconciously emulating "dog fashion" while in this scene the intimate couple and the copulating dogs are depicted in opposite directions of each other!

The artist Keisai Eisen mimicked the position of this couple in one of the designs of his well-known shunga parody
'A Light Spring Snow' (Haru no usuyuki) published in 1822.
