Rare Masterpiece Keisai Eisen - Group Sex - c.1822.

Rare Masterpiece Keisai Eisen - Group Sex - c.1822.

Description:
Antique Japanese color woodblock Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1822.
Aiban yoko-e size: 12 1/2" x 8 1/4" inches. Series: ' A Light Spring Snow' (Haru no usuyuki).
Title: 'The Distant Past of the Tenpyõ Era' (Tenpyõ hõji no mukashi).
Fine impression (with gauffrage), color and very good condition. A vertical crease at center. A couple small hole repairs from reverse. A few light spots, very minor rubbing and soiling. Fine sharp line work and vibrant, unfaded color with several subtle mica embellishments. The printing of this shunga is of an extremely high quality with excellent use of metallic pigments and gauffrage.

Magnificent depiction of a lascivious woman engaged with four men. Most strikingly in this illustration is the conspicuous display of sexual paraphernalia in the background. These were items that were available at the sex shop Yotsumeya - they specialized in sexual toys, aphrodisiacs, enhancing ointments and various remedies (often billed as exotic foreign imports). Yotsumeya merchandise often appeared in shunga, though rarely so prominently. Yotsumeya had branches in Edo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Excerpts from texts treating this design:

"...This illustration is linked to the Tenpyõ-Hõji era (757-65). During this turbulent period the same empress would come to power twice, first under the name Kõken and later as Shõtoku (718-70). Her reigns would be interrupted by the short rule of Emperor Junnin (733-65). Following her abdication as Empress Kõken she was strongly influenced by a Buddhist monk named Dõkyõ, a Rasputin-like character who urged her to take up a second reign. Her intense contact with and deep admiration of Dõkyõ gave rise to endless speculation about the nature of their relationship. Despite her reputation as a devout Buddhist she is frequently associated with lasciviousness. Eisen's striking image seems to reflect the latter metaphorically through the depiction of the figures' uninhibited sexual behaviour".

"...Remarkable in this composition is the ostentatious display in the background alcove of sex paraphernalia that were known to have been sold by the sex shop Yotsumeya (see Margarita Winkel's 'A Flier for the Aphrodisiacal Ointment Chõmeigan' ('long life medicine'), rin no wa (ring with movable beads), harikata (dildo) and yoroigata ('penis cap', literally 'armour form'). The title of the print might suggest that these were age-old devices, and their illlustration in the print might additionally have been intended as a type of 'product placement' by the Yotsumeya. Therefore it could be that the Yotsumeya was the sponsor of this work." (C. Uhlenbeck)

"...The first shunga plate of Vol. II is perhaps the most shocking of all those in the series: this kind of thing may, indeed, be permissible for macho males -- but surely, not for ladies! Anyway, that was the way most people thought in former times, before Women obtained the "Freedom to Fly"; and even in Eisen's robust era, this print was doubtless intended as something of a shocker". (R. Lane)

On Eisen's shunga work:

"...The Ukiyo-e master Keisai Eisen holds a unique position in the Japanese art form of shunga during the early-mid nineteenth century. In the decades following the death of the great Utamaro in 1806, it was principally Eisen who succeeded in continuing and extending Utamaro's vision of lovely--but eminently erotic--womanhood. Indeed, without Eisen, the figure prints of this era would mark one of their lowest ebbs in the history of Ukiyo-e." (R. Lane).

A very rare shocking masterpiece with an intriguing historical context from one of the most dominant forces of the 'Decadent Era' !

Hairstyles in ancient Japan were of great importance. They were an indication of a person's place in society and also their marital status. Japanese ancient hairstyles could command how others should behave around you and the amount of respect you could demand. Nowadays, Japanese hairstyles are seen as a fashion ornament but in ancient Japan, hairstyles were elemental to the culture and everyday life.

Important Kikugawa Eizan Design - Spring Pictures - c.1815.

Description:
Antique Japanese color woodblock Kikugawa Eizan (1787-1867). Date: c.1815. Oban yoko-e size: 14 3/4" x 9 3/4" inches.
Series: 'Haru no raku' (Spring Pictures). Fine impression, very good color and condition. Very slight vertical centerfold.
One small wormhole repair, very tiny paper loss due to the effect of the use of metallic pigments. Very minor wear and soiling, minor marks and flaws. Wonderful use of gold and silver pigments, black lacquer and gauffrage.

This composition is a riot of colour and contrasting textile designs -- it marks a complete break with the past. The increasing role of textiles as compositional elements is also apparent in non-shunga prints of this period, that is, from around 1810 to 1820. Depicted is a courtesan and her young patron. Their colourful kimino and patterned bedding decorate the screen forcing the beholder's eyes to focus on the exposed part between them. Both Eizan and his pupil Eisen excelled in the depiction of kimono patterns, and it is not clear if this indicates a shift in the function of shunga. It would be interesting to know if textile producers or dyers' shops commisioned sets like these.
