Lovers at a climatic moment. The woman's blue crumpled undergarment is a favourite detail in Hokusai's shunga (it also appears in white and red). It adds a special accent to many of his erotic pictures, as do the intricately patterned robes. The man uses a sex toy called higozuiki, a dried taro (arum maculatum) stalk that was wound around the penis, supposedly to enhance the woman's enjoyment. ( p. 160 in 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel )

(see Screech 1999: 284-86 and Lane and Hayashi (1995-98/2000:vol. supplemental vol. 1, 85-8, pl.95-101).

Description:

Original antique Japanese color woodblock print by Keisai Eisen (1790–1848). Shunga (Erotic print).
Date: c.1822. Oban yoko-e size: 14 1/5” x 9 3/4” inches. Series: 'A Light Spring Snow' (Haru no usuyuki).
Fine impression, very good color (with excellent use of metallic pigments!) and condition.
Very slight vertical centerfold, some slight staining and a couple of very tiny (tissue backed) holes.

“A great erotic scene from Eisen’s acclaimed A Light Spring Snow –series portraying a couple
making love on a pleasure boat.”

On this series: “In this album a diversity of love-making scenes are united through allusions to classical poems and historical tales, especially relating to Spring and the New Year. This album is unusual for the period in that many of the scenes are set en plein-air and not within the confines of establishments in the pleasure quarters. The printing is of an extremely high quality, with the frequent use of metallic pigments and gauffrage that is more typical of surimono. The album is dated in the preface.” (C. Uhlenbeck in Japanese Erotic Fantasies).

Eisen was an important artist, though not a particularly successful one. He studied painting at the Kano school and was later accepted at the studio of Kikugawa Eiji, the father of Eizan, with whom he became friends. It was during this phase that he became interested in ukiyo-e, Chinese painting and the works of Hokusai, whom he greatly admired. Eisen’s career began towards the end of the 1810s and though he also produced landscapes and pictures of famous places, his main focus was the human figure. He followed and in fact developed further the contemporary trend of representing women as vigorous and physically more realistic and solid. His courtesans wear sumptuous, highly decorated kimonos and increasingly grand and elaborate hairstyles. In his private life, Eisen is infamous for his bacchanalian parties at his own brothel. Here’s where he found his inspiration for drawing the courtesans and clients depicted in his bijin-ga and shunga.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock print by an unidentified artist. Date: c.1894-1905. Size: 10" x 6 3/4" inches.
Series: Takara no irifune (Treasure Ship Coming In). Title: Young Couple, April (Wisteria). Fine impression, color and condition. Minor marks and flaws only.

Young couple on a bike have an intimate appointment. In this design for April from the set Treasure Ship Coming In, the cartouche shows a woman giving a sign to her secret lover who is portrayed in silhouette.

Reference: p.459 (Fig.6) Shunga, Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art, Catalogue British Museum.

On this design:
“The young woman is likewise a female student, as we can deduce from the cartouche, where she is wearing hakama, the customary dress for female students, and riding a bicycle. Her partner is another representative Meijifigure, the schoolboy in military-style uniform. The cartouche was a popular convention in kuchi-e of the time, allowing the presentation of a different point in time and the means for reflection on temporal progression. In thedialogue, the boy praises her skill at riding a bicycle. The wrapper for the set which this design comes from has the title Takara no irifune” (Shunga in the Meiji Era, the End of a Tradition. on p.266/ Fig.9 by Rosina Buckland)

Japanese woodblock prints featuring bikes are a rarity.

Katsushika Hokusai – Tongue Kissing – The Jewelled Wig – c.1820.

Katsushika Hokusai – Tongue Kissing – The Jewelled Wig – c.1820.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Shunga (Spring picture). Date: c.1820.
Size: 10 1/5" x 8 3/4" inches. Series: Tamakazura (The Jewelled Wig). Fine impression, color and very good condition.
Very minor wear and soiling, some very tiny wormholes. Beautiful use of metallic pigments and embossing on the blanket.

Great design with a courtesan having intercourse with a regular (the tongue kissing is an indication!) client underneath a green blanket. The objects such as the tobacco pouch on the box behind them and the books laying near the woman’s head are ‘silent witnesses’ of their precoital activities. Look for Hokusai’s deliberate placement (a well-known stylistic addition of his!) of the blanket in the composition exposing the couple’s genitalia!

Tamakazura is one of Hokusai’s more obscure, less publicized book series. The title is apparently an allusion to Tamakazura (also known as Jewelled Flower Wreath), chapter 22 in the Tale of Genji.

Reference:
Another impression of this piece can be found on p.239 (fig.102a) in Japanese Erotic Fantasies by Chris Uhlenbeck, Margarita Winkel...etc.

A retired young woman is masturbating herself using a > tortoise-shell dildo (harikata) while reading a shungabook.

She’s holding her sleeve in front of her mouth which is a gesture of suppressed excitement.

A print that is characteristic of shunga from the Meiji era with exquisite printing, a generous use of metallic pigments and bokashi (tonal gradation) to express the lovely quality of the kimono. The contour lines are equally refined.

Terukata was a pupil of Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908). While at Toshikata’s studio he met and later married Sakakibara Shoen (1888-1917), who as Ikeda Shoen became an artist in her own right. Terukata was a designer of kuchi-e and an illustrator of books and magazines. He also produced many horizontal plates, often in albums of twelve images, that featured the latest fashions for major department stores like the Mitsukoshi.
These were sometimes issued as a form of advertisement. Terukata died at the young age of 38.

One of Terukata’s best shunga designs...a Meiji masterpiece !
