Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861)   -   Shunga p2026 ~ p2030

The parodying shunga prints by Kuniyoshi, published in c.1830, displayed below are characterized by the emphasis on Japanese folklore including subjects such as foreigners, Buddhist angels and Ashinaga-tenaga. One of the main protagonists appearing in most of the designs is Kobayashi Asahina, a character from the popular tale of the Soga brothers, who was a warrior during the Kamakura period. He is a somewhat naοve strongman known for his great strength and courage. Although he was a retainer of Kudō Suketsune and therefore a Soga enemy, he was on relatively good terms with the Soga brothers. In this shunga parody Asahina is presented as a clown-like figure.
