Very Rare Antique Chinese Erotic Reverse Glass Painting – c.1850.

Very Rare Antique Chinese Erotic Reverse Glass Painting – c.1850.

Description:

Original antique Japanese erotic reverse glass painting by an anonynous artist (unsigned like all Chinese erotica).
Size: ca. 4 2/3” x 6 2/3” inches (without frame). ca. 5 2/3” x 7 2/5” inches (incl. frame).
Very good state. Some minor loss of pigment.

A very nice piece of authentic Chinese painting made in the refined old school manner. Look for the subtle facial expressions , the transparant colors and the poetic atmosphere in which this threesome takes place. Such details are absent in later 19th Century works that are more focused on the decorative and physical (larger genitalia and more pronounced breasts) aspects. There’s also more attention to gratuitous effect in the later erotic paintings and they lack the refinement of the older pieces. In ancient China especially the very small feet of the young females were beloved by Chinese men and bare feet are very seldomly depicted.

In a lot of cases the erotic paintings and drawings, and the much rarer reverse glass paintings like this this one, were often used as an educational tool for newly weds.

A lovely tender erotic scene with three young participants involved in a love-play.

The frame adds a voyeuristic effect.

Description:

Japanese color woodblock Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (lit. Spring picture).
Date: c.1840. Tobira-e size: 7" x 9 2/3" inches. Fine impression, color and near fine condition.
Some very tiny binding holes. Minor wear and soiling otherwise superb state.
Excellent use of metallic pigment.

A highy detailed close-up portrait of an oiran (high-class courtesan).
A striking detail are the blackened teeth ( see below! ).

During the Edo period, ohaguro, or teeth blackening, was a common practice amongst married woman as a symbol of marital fidelity, with a young bride collecting the ingredients from seven close friends and relatives and dyeing her teeth for the time just prior to her wedding.

It was also practiced in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, where an apprentice courtesan would receive the ingredients from seven friends and dye her teeth for the first time when she was on the verge of making her debut and accepting her first customer.

Classic Kunisada - Four Seasons Series - Tattooed Ruffian - Suikoden Heroes - c.1827.

Classic Kunisada - Four Seasons Series - Tattooed Ruffian - Suikoden Heroes - c.1827.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1827.
Obon size: 13 1/3" x 10" inches. Fine impression, color and near fine condition.
Series: Prospects for the Four Seasons (Shunka shuto shiki no nagame).
Two very tiny (professionally backed) wormholes, minor wear and soiling, marks and flaws.

These pages come from an exquisitely printed and expensive erotic picture book, which was probably commisioned by a wealthy merchant at the time. The best carvers working in Ukiyo-e at the time were hired for the job and the prints were added with numerous gauffrage and metallic pigment details.

A marvellous erotic scene with an intimate couple distracted by a skein of geese passing in the background. The man is naked except for his red loincloth, allowing us a good view of the splendid tattoo on his back featuring one of the heroes of the Suikoden subduing an adversary. Pasted on the wall behind the couple are two woodblock prints, one of them showing the famous Kabuki actor Matsumoto Koshiro V on a print published by Takenouchi Magohachi.

"A scene of vigorous love-making by a working-class married couple. The man is tattooed with scenes from the famous saga of the 108 heroes of the Suikoden (The Water Margin). Originally a Chinese hero tale, the Suikoden was popularized in Japan with the novel Shinpen Suikogaden (New Illustrated Edition of the Suikoden), written by Takizawa (Kyokutei) Bakin (1767-1848) and illustrated by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). The ninety volumes appeared in serialized form from 1805 to 1838. In this composition two actor prints decorate the wall". (Excerpt from 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by C. Uhlenbeck)

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock by Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1860s.
Size: 9 1/2" x 7" inches. Very good impression, color and condition. Some very tiny binding holes.
Very minor soiling, marks and flaws.

A hilarious shunga design featuring three different scenes. The above (left and right panel) displays a man sticking his erected penis into a hole in the wall while on the other side of the wall an amused woman arouses a cat who is about to attack the man's private parts (a typical stylistic detail of Kyosai).

Below (left) a couple have an unexpected inconvenience with loosened penis tape ('higozuiki '). In the image on the right panel a woman is stroking the penis of her perplexed husband.

An excellent example of Kyosai's comical genius!

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1850.
Size: 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" inches. Fine impression, color and condition. Very thinly backed (ink bleed through visible!),
very minor marks and flaws only.

A woman is reading a shungabook for sensual inspiration while the man is cleaning his genitals. The number of used paper tissues scattered around indicates which stage of the sexual act they are and emphasizes, at the same time, the insatiable never-ending desire and length of the act.

The mosquito sitting on the net on the outside is an amusing detail.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock by Ikeda Terukata (1883-1921). Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1899.
Size: 13 1/5" x 9 1/2" inches. Fine impression, color and condition. Very slight centerfold, minor marks and
flaws. Wonderful use of gauffrage and 'bokashi'-shading.

A magnificent image depicting two lesbian lovers. A design heavily influenced by Eiri's shunga masterwork 'Models of Caligraphy'.

Terukata was part of a shift in artist attitudes towards shunga during the westernization of Japan at the end of the 19th century. Terukata and his peers rejected the classic depictions of the Yoshiwara seen in earlier shunga and embraced shunga "as a representation of exotized 'Bohemian Parisian culture'. These artists designed a number of albums that have no relationship to the Yoshiwara, include no text within the images and resemble earlier shunga only in the use of the orihon format." (p.217 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel)

On the recent art market Terukata's shunga prints are increasingly sought after by collectors.

Description:

Antique Japanese color woodblock by an unknown Meiji artist. Shunga (Erotic print). Date: c.1890.
Aiban yoko-e size: 13 1/3" x 9 3/4" inches. Series: 'Kuni no sakae'. Fine impression, color and condition.
Very slight centerfold, minor marks and flaws. Wonderful use of gauffrage and bokashi shading.

In the book 'Shunga, the Erotic Art of Japan' Marco Fagioli describes this series as follows: "These shunga are taken from the album 'Kuni no sakae', dating from around 1890 but still unattributable to any noted artist. The prints of this album (twelve aiban yoko-e, plus a tobira-e) are inspired by those of the book 'Manpuku wago-jin' illustrated by Hokusai in 1821; every one of these is the result of an operation of montage: for each one of his plates, the anonymous artist has reunited the subjects of various shunga of Hokusai's book making of them orgiastic scenes".
