The Bedroom Guide to Spring scenes (c.1847)

The Bedroom Guide to Spring Scenes (Shunshoku neya no shiori) - series is a cooperative work by the great artists Utagawa Kunisada and Keisai Eisen. It was instigated by Eisen who got inspired after the death of his friend and author Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842).

It´s luxuriously printed so it is suggested that it was an assignment of a rich merchant. Shunshoku neya no shiori tells the story of the complicated love triangle between Tokushichi and his young attractive niece Otayo and his voluptuous former lover Otsuya, who both try to seduce him.

“A scene at Tokushichi’s house. He has just made love to his bride who sits on the right, while on the other side Otsuya massages his tumid penis with her foot. In the explanatory cartouche the slang word henoko (‘prick’) is indicated through the use of a hiragana gloss, but in facttwo other homophonic characters are used to write it. This creates a simple wordplay. Literally translated, these two characters mean ‘turtle head’ – indeed a graphic description for Tokushichi’s sex organ!”
