Rare Kunitoshi - Yokohama-e - Ladies In Western Attire - c.1860.

Description:

Original Japanese woodblock print Kunitoshi (1847-1899). Yokohama-e (Westerners).
Date: c.1860s. Oban tate-e size: 9 1/4" x 13 7/8" inches. Signed: Kunitoshi. Very good
impression, color and condition. A few light spots, a very slight horizontal fold, overall in
a nice state.

Fascinating portrait of two Japanese women dressed in the latest Western fashions. Both wear long dresses with full skirts and overskirts pulled into bustles at the back. The tightly fitted bodices feature long sleeves and high collars, and each woman wears an elaborate hat decorated with feathers. An arrangement of blossoming branches sits in a large blue vase on a low red lacquer table at right. Nicely detailed and attractively colored. A strikingly rare detail is the artist's name which appears in English cursive at lower right instead of in Japanese. Another Western-influenced detail are the shadows on the overskirt of the woman on the left.

A handsome and unusual design showcasing the rapid modenization of Japan during the Meiji era.

Description:

Original Japanese woodblock print Utagawa Yoshimori (1830-1884). Yokohama-e (Westerners).
Date: 10/1872. Oban tate-e size: 8 1/4" x 13" inches. Signed: Kōsai sha (Yoshimori). Publisher:
Ōtaya Takichi. Title: 'An American Ship in the Open Sea off Arai'. Series: 'Painting and
Calligraphy of the Fifty-Three Stations' (Shoga gojūsan eki). Fine impression (with gauffrage),
very good color and condition. Backed with paper, horizontal centerfold (now flattened!), some
very small wormhole repairs, minor wear and soiling. Generally in a very good condition overall.

Magnificent design of a United States ship making its way through rough seas. The sails billowing and flags and pennants fluttering in the wind. The three masts rise above the frame of the lower image, giving the ship an impressive size and adding a real sense of depth to the scene. White-capped waves crash against the bow as the sea gently rolls, and a soft golden yellow glow spreads along the horizon. The telegraph was soon introduced to Japan and interest in this new technology can be seen the telegraph pole included in the design on the right.

One of the most dramatic images from this series, beautifully composed and detailed.
Fine cloth embossing in the background of the calligraphy panel across the top.

Original antique Japanese monochrome woodblock album Hokusai (1760-1849). Date:c.1834. Size: 9" x 6" inches.
Very good impressions and condition. Some small red stains, minor wrinkling and soiling, marks and flaws.

Publisher: Suharaya Shinbei. Published in 1 volume. With 12 double page B&W illustrations, 2 single page B&W illustrations and 1 double page color illustration with flowers and text!

This volume is based on the classic Chinese work Xiaojing, a further exercise by Hokusai in the field of Chinese iconography during this period. The image of a tidal wave overwhelming an entire army is especially ineteresting in its similarity to the rendering of the waves in Chie no Umi. Hokusai evidently felt the need to develop the theme of great waves, attempting new versions again and again, all the time exploring fresh approaches.

Description:

Original antique Japanese color woodblock Kogyo Tsukioka ( 1869-1927). Date: c.1900.
Total size: 14 3/4" x 9 3/4" inches. A Noh actor performing in a play! Very good condition,
impression and color. Use of gauffrage! Small tear on the middle left side of the design !
Kogyo was inspired by his stepfather, the famous Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who was a fan of the
Noh theater. Later he became a student of Ogata Gekko. Kogyo prints are perfect reflections of
the typical Noh theater. The compositions show an actor or a group of actors against a plain
background - sometimes with one or two requisites. A typical print by the artist looks more like
an ink drawing, painting or watercolor than a classical ukiyo print.

The production of a Gekko or Kogyo design required very skillful engravers and printers.

Original antique Japanese color woodblock (Triptych) Kiyochika (1847-1915), 1895, Senso-e (War print).
Very good condition. Panels joined, light wear and soiling, 1 inch moisture stain and center fold center panel !
Size: 14 x 28 inches. Title:' Captain Higuchi saves the baby' . Wonderfully detailed dramatic scene!  Kiyochika
is considered to be one of the most important Japanese artists of the Meiji period ! From 1876 on Kobayashi
Kiyochika created his first woodblock prints, scenes from Tokyo. Although his prints were basically kept in
traditional Japanese style, Kiyochika used Western elementslike perspective, the effect of light and the
graduations of shadows. By that time he probably had read about the French impressionists and seen
photographs of their works in newspapers. His prints show the beauty of the world around him during the Meiji
period with a certain nostalgia for the past. He made approximately 80 Warprints ! These War prints were like a
last commercial resurgence of the old Ukiyo-e business ! Kiyochika's war prints are regarded as among the best
in the genre, with a masterly play on the effects of light. In 1894 Kiyochika established his own artschool.
One of his students was Tsuchiya Koitsu who stayed in his master's home for 19 years. Today Kiyochika is
considered as the last master of the "old" ukiyo-e ! He was active until his death !

A wonderful and rare piece of art !
