“Two young lovers prepare to having intercourse at a foothill site near Mt. Fuji. In this design Eisen displays
a masterful combination of figures and landscape. The printing is of an extremely high quality, with excellent
use of metallic pigments and gauffrage that is more typical of surimono. This is one of the best designs of
‘A Light Spring Snow’-set which is considered a masterpiece.”

“A marvellous image featuring a male samurai fighting off three determined swordswomen on a roof.
The dynamics of the scene are emphasized by the portrayal of one of the women partly out of the frame and the flowing horizontal lines of the roof. The wojnderful use of pearl mica powder to the dark blue roof adds a dazzling glossy effect.”

Series: ‘Yakumo no chirigi (Poetic Intercourse). Fine impression (with excellent use of black lacquer),

“Two lovers under mosquito nettng. There’s another less explicit version of this design (lacking the genitals). Yakumo no chirigi is one of the best-known series of the Meiji period.”

A superb scene from the acclaimed Four Seasons –series. In a bathhouse we can observe two females executing their esoteric activities.The crouching woman holds a small bag (Furoshiki) including soap between her teeth. She is doing her laundry while at the same time cleaning her vulva. The curved feet of her standing companion is in shunga an indication of sexual excitement.”   (sp19)

A male lover using a tortoise-shell harigata (artificial phallus) on his partner. The depicted scroll on the right refers to Kunisada's own erotic design from his > Four Season'-series. From the series 'Shunshoku Tamazoroi' ( An Assortment of Pleasure in Spring ) published in the Kaei period in three volumes, illustrated by Kunisada and with text from Shotei Kinsui (1795-1862) writing under the pen name of Nyokan.

The first volume of this series was entitled 'Yokai no maki' (Volume of Ghosts), the second 'Kamegaya no maki' (Volume of Kamegaya) and the third 'Dokomachi no maki' (Volume of Doko Town).   (sp19- p1890 ~ p1911)

Excellent impression, fine color and near fine condition. Ohon (Oban) size: 13 1/2" x 9 2/3" inches. 
This design comes from Kunisada's series: 'Shunka shuto shiki no nagame'  (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter: 
Prospects for the Four Seasons) and is today his most valued work in shunga ! 
Very slightly trimmed, some very minor soiling, marks and flaws otherwise in a magnificent state ! No backing or repairs ! Wonderful use of gauffrage, lacquer, burnishing and metallic pigments! Highly detailed carving of individual hair-lines !

A married couple under the shelter of mosquito-netting, the woman lights an incense stick to ward off the mosquitoes.

Antique Japanese color woodblock attributed to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Shunga (Erotic print). 
Date: c.1820s. Oban yoko-e size: 14 1/2" x 10" inches. Very good impression, color and condition. 
Faint vertical centerfold, very slightly faded, minor marks and flaws. No repairs and virtually full size.

A couple making love near sliding doors, a lacquer tray with haircombs to the side, inscriptions above and to the left. 
It also suggested that this print might have been made by a pupil of Hokusai, Katsushika Hokuichi (active 1804-1830).

Fine impression (with gauffrage), color and very good condition. A vertical crease at center. 
A couple small hole repairs from reverse. A few ight spots, very minor rubbing and soiling. 
Fine sharp line work and vibrant, unfaded color with several subtle mica embellishments.
The printing of this shunga is of an extremely high quality with excellent use of metallic pigments and gauffrage.

“Magnificent depiction of a lascivious woman engaged with four men.
Most strikingly in this illustration is the conspicuous display of sexual paraphernalia in the background.”

Series: 'Ama no ukibashi ' (The Floating Bridge of Heaven). Size: 13" x 9 3/4" inches. Excellent impression (with metallic pigments, burnishing and gauffrage), color and near fine condition. Very minor wear and soiling, two minute wormholes (margin, not in the image) otherwise great condition.

Veiled by a diaphanous mosquito net, a man takes advantage of the young women's fear of heavy thunder.

The preface in this deluxe book dates it in to the 'Year of the Tiger' (1830).
