The old man points his finger towards the other couple as if to say, '
What they can do, we can do too'.
In contrast the enormous penises usually depicted in shunga, here the
old man's scrotum is greatly enlarged.
His tools for working on the rice fields are stored under the
veranda'. ('Japanese Erotic Prints, shunga by Harunobu &
Koryusai ' , Inge Klompmakers).

This series is one of Harunobu's most famous shunga works, and
perhaps one of the best known works in his whole oeuvre!
The complete series consist of two sets of twelve prints each in which
a miniature man, Maneemon or ' Imitation man', spies on lovers and
sometimes imitates them in his own funny but touching way! It is
sometimes suggested that Maneemon was Harunobu himself!
A magnificent design by one
of the greatest Ukiyo-e masters!

Wonderful Shunga Catalogue 'Japanese
Erotic Fantasies'.

Description:
Wonderfully illustrated catalogue (2004) English. Hardcover
248pp. Size: 10 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches. Excellent condition.
Title: 'Japanese Erotic Fantasies' by G. Winkel and C. Uhlenbeck.
With 277 full colour illustrations of the prints shown at the
largest shunga exhibition ever held in the world called "Lentelust" in
Rotterdam, the Netherlands! There's an excellent historical overview
(17th C. to Meiji period and beyond) of the genre with treatments on
all the major Ukiyo-e masters such as Settei, Moronobu, Harunobu,
Koryusai, Hokusai, Utamaro, Eiri, Shunchτ, Kiyonaga, Shigenobu,
Eisen, Eizan, Kunisada, Kyosai...etc.
There's all so a lot of attention to the social, historical and
artistic context, the various impressions, techniques of
composition, formats, toy-prints, voyeurism, homosexuality and
the humour in the designs! In our opinion this book is the most
beautifully illustrated and best reference in the shunga genre
surpassing the somewhat dated ' Shunga, the Art of Love in
Japan' by Tom and Mary Evans!
Unmissable for the shunga
connoisseur! A future classic !

The location of Koryusai's signature in this print is worth noting:

Koryusai's genius was more earthy in comparison with the dreamlike
designs of Harunobu.
